Green light on: Irish Moss

Discover why this powerful marine ingredient is currently trending.

Irish moss, or ‘Chondrus Crispus’, is a true powerhouse for the skin, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a must-have ingredient in the world of beauty. A type of red algae, you’ll find it growing in abundance on the Atlantic waters in the west coast of Ireland – and also bottled in our Aurora Perfecting Serum.

Rich in sulphur, it’s particularly brilliant for acneic skin as it can decrease excessive oil production, while also helping to balance the skin’s microbiome thanks to its antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial functions. Irish moss also contains 15 of the essential elements that make up the human body, such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin A and K – which collectively help to reduce wrinkles, boost hydration and protect the skin from environmental aggressors.

Like other sea-born ingredients, Irish moss contains vital minerals that are often missing in the average diet, like omega-3 fatty acids, which work to improve inflammatory issues from the inside out. It’s also very gentle on the skin, so you can use it as part of your daily skincare routine without worrying that it might cause dryness or sensitivity.

If you’re looking to start your marine skincare journey, we think Irish moss is a great place to start. For those who want to take it even further, then you can also add our Nova Illuminating Moisturiser into the mix, which is boosted with sea kelp (‘Laminaria Digitata’). This type of brown seaweed is yet another weird and wonderful ingredient for your skin, which has similar calming properties to Irish moss, as well as being packed full of antioxidants.
